Shit’s seriously good, okay?!
Once more this fine website serves to bring people and good music together outside of just the rantings you see posted here. Dead Goeff from Purple Bird Music hit me off with an email a little while ago after stumbling across this fine site and consequently seeing the connection between his label and this blog. Always crazy cool when shit like that happens. This isn’t the first time, but this sort of thing doesn’t happen as often as we’d like to see - artists/labels/etc, send some mail!
Anyways, the matter at hand…
I downloaded all the material included on the Purple Bird Music website, I’m going to holler at you all about the two releases from the camp that really do it for me.

Dead Geoff & Mister Thumbs - “The Opposables” (mirror1) (mirror2)
An obvious collaboration of near brilliance, Dead Geoff and Mister Thumbs come together from seeming opposite ends of their collective spectrum, not unlike the polarity oft mentioned of Big Boi and Andre3000 from Outkast. It’s hard to say how true that is, knowing next to nothing of either Dead Geoff or Mister Thumbs, but that type of vibe definitely comes across via the lyrics and their delivery, as well as the type of beats brought to the table. Even further extending the mention of Outkast is simply the variety of beats and melodies inside. At one minute borderline crazy experimental hip hop, the next minute radio friendly hook ready melodic brilliance bordering on corny nonsense, each tune works on its own and as part of the whole equally well. I don’t want to give the impression, by the way, that this release or these two artists sound anything like Outkast, because they really don’t. I am simply trying to highlight the seeming polarity of the two artists and the ground they stand alone on combined with the ground they share together. In fact, actual sonic resemblences are kind of hard to pin point like “Oh, so-and-so sounds like such-and-such” style. And that’s a good thing. That said, I definitely catch flavors from the midwest hip hop power house crew of Rhymesayers, smell hints of the more leftfield output from crews like Def Jux, and the air of being both underground of the utmost and crossover cats (think Tech N9ne) is definitely there, too. Personally, the stand out track is “Renoise”, but all are top notch for the angle they hit you at and come from. Good for the party and the armchair, fans of good hip hop - and fans just of good beats & melodies - should definitely not sleep.

Chi’ Akai - “Epoch EP” (mirror1) (mirror2)
The shit is sexy, alright? Fuzzy headed tripped out steppy downtempo deliciousness in its purest form. Obvious comparisons to people like Flying Lotus, Blockhead, and the like will surely be drawn - but, fear not, Chi’ Akai is still off on his own planet programming crazy b-boy sex robots to infect your daydreams and gazing eyes. The futureretro language of gettin’ down and gettin’ it on, as well as the soundtrack for racking paint and painting burners or whole cars.
The crew gets extra bonus points for professionalism across the board, as well as having an obvious passion for what they do. Each release contains great music, mastered and professionally assembled, top shelf art and all. Follow them on Twitter to keep up to date and have a taste of their hype, excitement, and passion for what they are doing.

I was pretty happy this morning to wake up to a message from Cat-Grrl about a new release on Canadian digital hardcore label D-Trash. Alongside her oversexed gabbafied breaks are tunes from Sydney based artists Maladroit and Mothball Z so I’m hoping for a local release party sometime soon.
Other highlights come from FFF, Microphyst, Shotgun Orcherstra and Xäcksecks. The release spans a pretty wide cross section of contemporary breakcore from tracker pop mashup to heavy drum and bass, raggacore and glitchy acid rave. D-Trash have made a promo mix of all the tracks available for free download. I’m still not sure how you go about actually buying the CD, perhaps because its such a new release the site store hasn’t been updated yet.
Though the free mix is appreciated I want the CD so I can play at least these three tunes.
Microphyst - Turbo Bastard
It’s been a while since I heard such a funky intro to a breakcore tune. Its got little rushes and edits around a big distorted half time break and plenty of space for the pads. As an intro tune this would work well in a dj set. The half time break drops in and out, competing with a steppier version of the same break, bass edits and full brock-out drums. Unlike many that try this approach the track retains cohesion and feels like a composed piece of music rather than a kid with ADD in front of a laptop.
Xäcksecks - Bust and Grind
I’d never heard of Xäcksecks before but there’s some good proper rave music here. A dense collage of vocal samples drawing from hip hop, crunk and ghetto tek are spliced coherently and feverishly, moving with the vibe of the song and not crowding the melodic or percussive elements. The drum work is heavy and varied with smooth transitions between gabba kicks, hardstyle and jungle breaks. No amazing edits but it’s all expressive and would suit a 4 am frame of mind perfectly. Bonus points for the lead.
Gat-Grrl - The Revolution Is Your Boyfriend
A couple of years ago I played a Cat-Grrl song at re:fest, i can’t remember if it was this or Grrlvert, but I remember the collective smirk on the face of the dancefloor when the samples come in and the sudden explosion of feet and arms when the kicks come in. The Revolution… has pretty solid dancefloor beats, heavy 4/4 kicks and rolling amens held together well with nice pad work and an atmospheric bassline. Write some more music please.

Free over at Coffee Core is this choice helping of heaviness, darkness, and deepness. Awkwardly entitled “The Subculture Of Doomcore Is Unruly”, from the - now a solo - operation known as Creatures Of The Occult, it absolutely, positively delivers the goods. It definitely reminds me of mentioned influences from Nordcore and Stickhead, and it rings pretty true to the sound within a bunch of the Lord Lloigor catalogue. Real, real tasty stuff.

Here it is, after much delay and about a million changed plans. The massive various artist compilation poised for sound system destruction across the entire globe - Bludclot Recordings’ “Loose”! Available as a free download in 320kbps MP3, the compilation eventually took on a life of its own that was hard to keep in control - much like life itself for us here at Bludclot headquarters and for those involved at all points on the map. Thusly, along with reformulating the goal of this label and this project, the original plan for a CD release was canned. So, we hope you enjoy the ease of access and sharing that a free high quality download affords, but more importantly we hope you find this compilation to be as remarkable as the entire process of putting it together has been for everyone involved.
Massive respect to each and every artist that appears on the tracklist, those who helped master it, everyone who offered input and advice, and most especially - those of you out there downloading, rinsing, and sharing the Bludclot Recordings music! Burn CDs for your friends, play it out at gigs, put it in your podcasts!

I’m not as big of a Prefuse73 fan as I was when he first surfaced during the first half of this decade, but I am definitely a pretty big fan of Gaslamp Killer. Much like potentially seeing King Cannibal, I kind of resigned myself to the fact that I would have to travel quite a bit to see him or simply never be presented the opportunity to realistically do so. So, imagine my surprise and excitement when I found out about this show! Fargo/Moorhead and surrounding areas - you don’t often get a chance like this, so do not miss out!

King Cannibal has been doing the damn thing for a while, really blowing up the spot with his most recent full length on Ninja Tune. I’d pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I wouldn’t be able to see him while still of an age and mind to do so without living across the pond or on either coast. The midwest is often several years behind the times in a lot of regards and we simply don’t get the kind of talent at events the east and west coast do. Thankfully the opportunity has arisen and I am trying like mad to make plans and sort finances so I can be there. It’ll be a good 5 or so hour drive, but I am dead set on making it happen if at all possible. If you’re anywhere even remotely in the area, you should too!
Here’s some mixes to further entice and educate you…
